Leimkühler Lab

About Us

Welcome to the LeimkühlerLab. We specialize in research and analysis in Myelofibrosis and related areas. Our group was formed in 2022 under the Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Uniklinikum Essen. Our focus includes myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer where scar tissue replaces bone marrow, impairing blood production and often leading to rapid decline or acute leukemia. Stem cell transplantation offers a potential cure, yet many patients are deemed unfit for the procedure. Our research aims to understand myelofibrosis's origins and devise effective treatments. We investigate the cells responsible for bone marrow scarring and draw insights from stem cell therapy. Our goal is to develop safer, equally effective therapies for patients. Our research is in molecular genetics and cellular biology with practical clinical applications, driven by our direct involvement with patients. The quest to unravel myelofibrosis's complexities fuels our curiosity and underscores the importance of addressing unanswered questions. This intersection of science and patient care propels us forward in our pursuit of better treatments and improved outcomes for those affected by myelofibrosis.

Arzoo Shamoon

Doctoral Researcher

Arzoo Shamoon is a Doctoral student and bioinformatician at the West German Cancer Centre, Clinic for Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the University Klinikum-Essen, under the guidance of Dr. med Nils Leimkühler. Her doctoral research primarily focuses on myelofibrosis. Arzoo actively participates in collaborative projects that involve single-cell RNA sequencing in leukemia, as well as gene expression analysis in COVID-19. With a Master of Science degree in Bioinformatics from India, Arzoo brings a robust expertise in next-generation sequencing data analysis, structural bioinformatics, and computer-aided drug discovery to her work. In the Leimkühler lab, she contributes significantly to advancing our understanding of hematological disorders and infectious diseases through cutting-edge bioinformatics techniques and collaborative research efforts.!
